Anesthesia and Patient Monitoring

We understand how frightening it can be to have your cherished pet undergo anesthesia.  We work very hard to provide your pet with the safest anesthesia procedure possible and are dedicated to careful monitoring of all your pet's vital signs while under anesthesia.

We start with pre-anesthesia blood work to evaluate organ function and your pet's platelets, red and white blood cells.  This helps us determine what anesthetic drugs and pain medications are most appropriate for your pet and helps us determine which fluid to give and at what rate while your pet is anesthetized.

While anesthetized, your pet is connected to our monitor which gives a continuous ECG reading and measures blood pressure, capnography (CO2 level), SPO2 (oxygen level) and temperature.  The pet is also manually monitored by a dedicated anestheisa staff who checks heart rate, capillary refill time and reflexes.  This allows us to detect and quickly respond to any problem that may arise before it becomes critical.

We keep your pet warm during surgery on a circulating warm water blanket.  Once moved to a kennel for recovery, pets are placed in cozy blankets and towels with safe warming devices as necessary.  Keeping pets warm is very important as they recover from anesthesia.

Monitoring continues long after the pet is awake.  Our dedicated staff frequently checks your pet's gum color, heart and respiratory rates as well as provides much TLC until the pet is ready to go home.
